The Welbeck meltdown

The transfer window slams shut and with it goes the hopes of Arsene bringing in a defensive midfielder that so many Arsenal fans have been crying out for. No new central defender to replace Thomas Vermaelen either and with that, our hopes of winning the title are gone. This seems the general attitude amongst most of our fans since 11pm last night including myself. However, today I have woken up and started looking at the positives, and so I should especially after my last blog entitled ‘Arsenal Will Win The League’. I even tweeted saying i regretted writing that blog but now ive calmed down and the emotions have gone im thinking clearly again. Like I said before we have signed a world class player in Alexis Sanchez and his work rate has been exceptional. A goal in the Champions League qualifier and a goal at Leicester on Sunday has already shown how vital he is for us already. Debuchy and Chambers have shown their qualities proving to be exceptional buys. So going into transfer deadline day what was needed the most? Cover for centre back ‘incase’ we get injuries? A defensive midfielder? Or due to Giroud now being injured for 3-4 months, a striker? In my opinion a striker was needed the most. We are not going to challenge for honours with Sanogo up front. I’m sorry but were just not. Still yet to score a goal for Arsenal in a competitive match and with every passing match he seems to get more frustrated and more anxious. Personally i would rather give Akpom a chance up top over Sanogo.

19th June 2014 and im watching England vs Uruguay tweeting at the same time about how awful Danny Welbeck is. Second half im fuming that Roy leaves Welbeck on who for me was one of the worst players on the pitch. We end up losing 2-1 and luckily for Welbeck its Gerrard who gets my back up more for setting up his Liverpool team-mate to score against us. Fast forward a couple of months and its deadline day and we NEED a striker. Piers Morgan tweets that he has heard Danny Welbeck is on his way to Arsenal on a loan deal. The next thing i hear is that Danny Welbeck is at Colney trying to push through a move to Arsenal. My reaction on twitter was maybe a little over the top.

As you can tell I wasnt Welbeck’s biggest fan. All I was seeing was ‘well he’s better than nothing’ and ‘at least hes better than Sanogo’. I’m sitting there thinking to myself ‘why are these fans happy to settle for a mediocre player?’. I wanted the worlds best at my club, I wanted Cavani, I wanted Falcao, I wanted Benzema ect… Safe to say I was having a bit of a meltdown. Thinking to myself, that’s it, we wont even make top four.. i was not happy. Then as the 11pm deadline was approaching I found myself thinking ‘imagine we don’t even get Welbeck’. What was happening to me? I was somehow thinking like everyone else. ‘He’s better than nothing’. It’s amazing how many emotions and thoughts you go through during a transfer window when its small margins that matter come May. Like I said, today I have woken up and feel positive now. I havent ever rated Welbeck but a lot to do with that could have been a biased opinion based on the fact that he was a Man Utd player. For example ive always been a fan of Di Maria, but the moment he signed for Utd I now think he is scum. So now I have to get behind Welbeck, give him my support and judge him purely on his Arsenal performances. He’s not the player I wanted but he is what I wanted, a striker.

England v Belgium - International Friendly

So in a nutshell, I still do think we are very capable of winning the league. When you look at our team, it’s a very good team. I feel like we just havent clicked yet this season and a couple of players havent stepped up. The likes of Ramsey and Ozil just have not turned up yet. On the flip side, I think Wilshere has been brilliant and the likes of Cazorla, Alexis, Debuchy, Chambers and Monreal have been excellent. Once it all clicks together I can see some wonderful displays to come. Lets not forget that we are still unbeaten this season despite not playing that well. Theres a lot to be positive about so let’s get really behind the team now and march on until January’s transfer window when we can all lose our heads again. 🙂

Arsenal will win the league!!!

As another season beckons we fill ourselves with hope, optimism, confidence and belief. As Arsenal fans there is always the flip side to them feelings aswell. Fear, pessimism, doubt and dis-belief. However, things seem different this year, I for one feel that the tide has finally turned and this could be our season. This summer we have lost our captain (again!!!) Thomas Vermaelen and our very reliable right back Bacary Sagna. Just another summer for Arsenal where we sell our best players then? Far from it. Not one Arsenal fan seems to be bothered that we have lost these two players. In fact, no one even seems bothered that we didnt bring Cesc Fabregas back. Why? The answer is quite simple, firstly, the players we have brought in are just as good if not better. Secondly, the quality of players we already have in our squad.

Debuchy, Ospina, Chambers & Alexis

Do I think we still need to bring in a centre back and a beast of a defensive midfielder? Yes. Am I confident that we will challenge for honours this season even if we don’t? Absolutely. Heres why. The FA Cup win has changed everything. We now have belief, it has brought the squad closer together and I believe they are hungrier for more now. They saw 250,000 of us celebrating in Islington and I think that lit a fire under Arsene’s arse. Lets be honest, we wasnt that far away from the Premier League last year (2 wins and 1 draw away in fact). Without a doubt we have a stronger squad this year, Alexis is gonna offer us so much. You could see by some of the runs he was making in the Community Shield against Man City that he is going to be a handful for defences. Debuchy was a perfect replacement for Sagna. Experienced and has slotted in like he has been with us for years. Ospina replaces Fabianski and in come’s Calum Chambers. I’ll be honest, when we signed him i didnt know too much about him and was a bit dubious at the £16 million we have allegedly paid for him. All I can say is what a signing. He has slotted in at centre back superbly and the way he played against City was amazing to watch. There must be a mistake, he can’t be just 19 years old, surely not. From block 137 row 40 at Wembley I witnessed Chambers barking orders at Monreal, making sure Nacho was in the right position. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. We have a player on our hands with Chambers and im very much looking forward to his development.

Its raining trophies

Then we have the rest of our squad who are only getting better, Aaron Ramsey improves every match. I can see Jack Wilshere having a great season, the likes of Cazorla and Ozil are absolute world-class players. Joel Campbell is going to add a lot, as is the likes of the reliable Rosicky, Chamberlain, and Walcott. The list goes on, it really is an exciting time at Arsenal. I honestly think we can win the league this year. Having said that, to challenge in all competitions aswell as the League we need to add more. If we can bring in a decent centre back with experience and an absolute beast of a DM I feel like we have a squad to challenge in the Champions League. We have to have a squad big enough aswell as good enough to finally deal with any injuries we may get this season. I know what names I would like to see come in but im not going to add to the millions of rumours already circulating the twittersfere. September 1st at 11pm we will know if we can mount a serious Champions League challenge this season. (Providing we qualify against Besiktas)

We know that we are very much capable of winning the league but here is the real question that many fans are a little reluctant to answer. WILL WE WIN THE LEAGUE? I’m gonna stick my head out here and say YES. I believe this season (2014/15) Arsenal will win the league. I just have this feeling. The same feeling I had on the way to Wembley for the Community Shield when I said to my cousin that we will win 3-0.  The same feeling I had back in 2001 when I said England are going to beat Germany 5-1 and all my friends laughed at me. I’m not psychic or anything like that. I just have a gut feeling in my belly that this is our year. Maybe its hope, maybe it’s that dodgy burger I had outside Wembley yesterday, whatever it is I don’t care. I’m putting it out there, Arsenal will win the league this season.

Zelalem. World Class??

Firstly, as this is my first ever blog, a little about me. Im 33 years old which means ive supported Arsenal for 33 years, hence the name AFCsince81. I know it seems impossible to support Arsenal at the age of 1 day, or 6 months, even maybe 2/3 years old but trust me, my Dad instilled Arsenal on me from as far back as i remember so as far as im concerned i was born in a red and white jersey. Like many fans i let Arsenal affect me in every way, a win on a Saturday afternoon and i am the happiest person in the world, ever-present is my smile and i walk around on cloud 9, probably attempting a moonwalk. However, a defeat and i turn into Simon from the Inbetweeners, storming off telling everyone in sight to f*** off, climb onto a shed and reflect on how bad my life is now that Arsenal have lost. Luckily, there has been more to cheer about over the years than to jeer about. Everything i write is my opinion and whether you agree with me or not i will always value your opinions. Its finally time to write some blogs about the greatest club on planet Earth, my beloved Arsenal, simply because 140 characters on twitter just isn’t enough.

Exactly how i feel when we lose.

Zelalem. World Class??

The first time i set eyes on Gedion Zelalem was in pre season last summer for the senior squad in Asia, my first thoughts were ‘wow, this kid has got something special’. Just 16 at the time Gedion showed maturity, confidence, class and best of all, ability. His passing reminded me of a young Cesc Fabregas but dare i say it… better. Gedion recieved a lot of praise and made a lot of people take notice of him, in my opinion, rightly so. His vision combined with ability to play the right ball was simply beautiful to watch. He oozed confidence and always wanted the ball. I was already thinking that this kid could start a few games this year. He was on the bench for our second Premier League match of the season but wasnt used. It wasnt until January 24th 2014 however that Gedion Zelalem made his senior debut, coming on in the 71st minute against Coventry City in the FA Cup and once again played with confidence. To this date thats his only senior appearance but after signing a new contract extension in March 2014 im confident we will be seeing a lot more of this kid.

There’s no doubt that Arsenal needed to add to this squad for the 2014/15 season. Even after the purchases of Debuchy, Sanchez, Chambers and Ospina its in my opinion (and in the opinion of many other Arsenal fans) that we need a defensive midfielder, which leads me to this question… Where does Zelalem fit in this Arsenal midfield? It’s probably the one area in our squad that we are strong. Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil, Rosicky, Arteta, Cazorla, Flamini, Coquelin, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diaby (Dont laugh) would all probably be above Zelalem in the pecking order. However, at 17 he does have time on his side and after being included in the squad travelling to New York and the Emirates Cup this could once again be his time to show exactly what he is capable of. Wenger, however has already said that he is not Premier League ready (but could be in 6 months time). Also adding ‘Zelalem can become a great player – that will be decided in the next 3 years’. Thierry Henry has also praised the youngster after a number of training sessions together.

Wenger talks about Zelalem

I for one am very excited about Zelalem and believe he could become a world-class player, given the opportunity. A bold statement i know but if he can stay injury free this season, work on his physique and get a few league cup games under his belt i truly believe he will be involved alot more in the 2015/16 season. Maybe even a season long loan could be a good move. His calmness on the ball makes me feel at ease and with the pace of Sanchez, Walcott and Chamberlain ahead of him can you imagine some of  the through balls he could play with his Ozil-esque type of vision.

Gedion Zelalem: Remember The Name

In a time where most football teams simply buy ready-made world class players and the need for clubs to have instant success on the field, is there any hope of Zelalem coming up through the ranks? Play him in a League Cup game that we lose and many fans including myself will probably only complain that we diddnt put out a stronger team, with that said, how are the talented youngsters meant to break through? An injury crisis? A loan move? Managers faith/gamble? Who knows? All i know is Zelalem is one talented individual who (in my opinion) could be a World Class player in years to come and im very much looking forward to seeing him develop.
